Across from the Park sits the National Historic Register Palmer Park Apartment District, a neighborhood with magnificent and widely diverse styles of architecture, designed by some of Detroit's most prominent architects. “When Loretta suggested it, it sounded radical,” Everton admits, but they’re happy they listened. The calendar may say it’s closer to Thanksgiving, but inside Everton Swearing and Arthur White’s 1924 English cottage in Palmer Woods, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Holiday lights twinkle on the living room tree and mantel, a balsam and fir garland winds its way up the stairs to the second floor, and the nearby dining room table is set with century-old china, monogrammed napkins and place cards. Palmer Park’s historic 1880’s Log Cabin was also open for touring with knowledgeable docents on hand, . Built in 1885 for Senator Thomas Palmer and his wife Lizzie as their summer retreat, the cabin was once filled with antiques and visitors who would travel north on Woodward in horse-drawn carts. By 1895, Sen. Palmer had donated much of his farmland and woods to the city of Detroit to be used as a pleasure park for the people. She shops for the home year-round, keeping her eye out for just the right thing and sending the couple pictures of antiques and furnishings, including Christmas decorations, that she thinks would work for them.
